Eleanor Roosevelt

Her Life

Eleanor Roosevelt was born in October 1884. In 1892 Eleanor's father was sent to a mental Centre and when Eleanor was eight her mother died of diphtheria, so Eleanor moved in with her Grandmother in New York. But later went to school in England. She then married Franklin Delano Roosevelt in 1905. Over ten years Eleanor gave birth to six children (one died ).  In 1932 Franklin was elected president, this gave Eleanor more opportunities to express her beliefs about human rights. Soon after Eleanor was holding weekly press conferences mainly speaking about woman's rights. In 1935 she started writing a column called “My Day”. When WW1 came Eleanor was concerned about the soldiers and volunteered at St. Elizabeth Hospital. Franklin died on April 12, 1945 but she continued to be a leading spokesperson on woman's rights. Eleanor was elected to the United Nations in London that same year but resigned and was appointed to chairperson for the Commission on Human Rights. In 1962 she died of Tuberculosis.

What were the attributes of Eleanor?
  • Eleanor dedicated most of her life to others and in what she believed in. She was a very brave woman and also very intelligent. she was extremely active always joining leagues, unions and groups. Another example of this is that throughout her life she wrote nine books and had a column till the day she died. She was also quite caring as shown when she volunteered at the hospital during WW1. In 1948 she also proved that her care was not just for woman but also for men when she spoke about the struggle for men during a meeting of the United Nations.
What key events show her leadership style?
  • As Eleanor was an active leader there are many examples that show her leadership style but some key events are these: volunteered at St. Elizabeth Hospital, Eleanor and a few others purchased Todhunter School in New York where Eleanor taught history and government, She assisted with the Arthurdale homestead project for coal miners in West Virginia, Eleanor assisted with the formation of the National Youth Administration, She published a column, "My Day." Eleanor influenced the Army Nurse Corps to open its membership to black women, Eleanor speaks on "The Struggles for the Rights of Man."
How did Eleanor’s life influence others?
  • She renewed woman's confidence by giving them the right to vote. She also inspired woman to do and try new things as she was a very powerful woman herself. She was a great role model for the people of America which is showed by her loyalty and kindness to people. Over all Eleanor Roosevelt inspired others through her actions.
How did others view her - now? then?
  • Most people haven't changed their opinion on her then or now she has always believed to be a great leader and role model but her existence is fading as time passes as most of the focus is on her husband, Franklin as he was President, even though she made great changes throughout her husband's presidency.
In conclusion Eleanor remains to be seen as one of the greatest female leaders of all time proven by her actions and attitude towards things. She influenced the lives of many people but mostly woman as she fought hard for justice and what she believed in. The events in her life made her the way she was which was a caring, loyal, intelligent and a brave person.
